Kathie and Larry Young of the Our Drawing Room drawing group organized a drawing session as part of the FusionArts Steampunk Festival.
The event was billed from 4:30 to 9 When I arrived just after 6, Alex was working and was just finishing a set. The session was quite informal, and almost stopped after she was done, but happily volunteer models were game to work for a couple of hours after that.
The brick works were tricky to find, in a beautiful stretch of ravines. The trip to and from it was so lovely that had there been no drawing on arrival, it was still totally worth the trip. There were a lot of people having fun with various types of dress-up, and I was sorry a few more of them didn't come pose for the drawers.
The studies here are all in the 10-20-minute range, some with post-session shading added. The materials are all a mix of graphite pencil, water-soluble pencils and Artgraf washes and a bit of Pitt pen on 18 x 24" Canson XL Mixed Media paper.
The last two are Pitt pen and Copic markers on 12 x 18" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper. The drawing session proper wound up a little before 8, so I went and did some images based on a couple of the people doing circus and fire performances. After that, there was a stretch of live music and fire spinning in front of the quarry pond, while chimney swifts darted around. It was all quite magical.
The site, with its industrial history and architecture made a very appropriate setting for alt-Victoriana.
