1st entry for Sept. 11, 2011

On the Sunday, I was a bit weary, but determined to investigate an idea for an upcoming show, where members of the Five Lovely Guys group each undertook to do some work on 1' x 2' panels of plywood.
The upper study is a 20-minute warm-up study of M-  (not the best likeness, though) on an 18 x 24" sheet of cartridge paper.
The lower one is a 1.5 hour study on sanded and gessoed plywood. Both are done with Koh-I-Noor compressed charcoal.
The panel is now hanging at The Blue Moon pub on Queen St E, just past Broadview, as part of the Five Lovely Guys "Twice in a Blue Moon" exhibit.
There will be a party there on Saturday, Sept 24 from 7 pm onwards. Sadly, I will only be there for the first hour, but through the night there will be performances by 5LG affiliates- Anne-Marie Hood and Anupa Khemadasa; Michelle Rumball; and Murray McKay will be performing with his Klezmer band.
All this joy and will only cost you $5 at the door, so come say hi, hoist a beer and enjoy great music and lovely company.

The evening of May 31st marked the successful launch party for a month-long show of work from people associated with the TSA's Thursday night drawing sessions.  It's at the Blue Moon pub, at 725 Queen St E, just east of Broadview.
If you're checking out the Riverdale Art Walk (RAW) this weekend, check it out.  The work will be up 'til the end of June.

** Today, Tuesday May 31, marks the opening of a group exhibit I'm participating in. It's called A Figure Runs Through It,   and features works by over 20  artists who are involved in a very loose collective, called `Five Loely Guys'   (the number and gender never having had any literal meaning.
5 Lovely Guys coalesced from the TSA's Thursday night drawing sessions. The show is at the Blue Moon pub, at 725 Queen St E (just east of Broadview. We'll be there from 7 - 10, give or take, so drop by and say hi if you're in the area.

My piece in the show is an overlay of two graphite studies of Z-   , both done done on Japanese paper.

6th Entry for Mar. 13, 2011

These are both 15-minute studies, done with 9B graphite on 18 x 24" cartridge paper. The topmost pose that E-   took reminded me of the Neptune figure on the famous Cellini saltcellar, albeit more vertical.

Some of the drawings like these will be on show at the White Wall North Gallery in Toronto, up on Lawrence Ave. near Leslie. You can get more details on their website.

Also, if any of you are looking fo some instruction, the Spring term at the Toronto School of Art is starting in two weeks. You can get information on the classes I teach, on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings , if you click here.

In the afternoon, I worked on two longer studies of S-  . The upper one is on 18 x 24" Japanese paper, and took about 2 hours. The lower ne is on 22 x 30" Japanese paper, and took about 45 minutes.
As is often the case, the quicker study is the fresher of the two.

3rd Entry for Jan 30, 2011

I only caught the tail end of the evening session over at the TSA.   A- was working, and I hadn't drawn her before, either.
These are a 15-minute study above and a 20-minute study below. The upper is graphite on cartridge paper, the lower on Japanese paper, both about 18 x 24" in dimensions.

I might add for Toronto drawing afficionados, I have a non-figurative drawing up on exhibit from now through March 5, 2011.

The exhibit is called "Drawing 2011", and it is at the John B. Aird gallery, in the Macdonald Block (900 Bay St. W - the south-west corner of Bay and Wellesley).
It's a juried exhibition, and a very good drawing survey show.  There just aren't enough drawing exhibitions. You can learn more about the show here.

These are a 10-minute study above, and a 15-minute one below. This was right after a week-long anatomy workshop, so I was extra-aware of muscle & bone forms beneath the surface.
