1st entry for Sept. 4, 2011

On the Sunday, I got in for the end of the morning, and stayed through much of the afternoon. A-  was working.
The top study is 15 minutes, done with hard compressed charcoal on 18 x 24" sheets of cartridge paper.
The same materials were used for the three studies for the afternoon, which are roughly 40 minutes for the torso, and 25 minutes each for the head and legs.  I was exploring a notion of muti-pages working together to convey the pose, but broken up.
The lighting was quite low, and given A-  's fairly pale skin, I overdid the degree of shadow.Given my omission of the surrounding dark walls, it would have made sense to convey shadow with a lighter value. The torso fragment was all right, but the legs and lower torso don't function so well - they should have a little more - or less - drawing in them. The head study is okay, and works all right with the torso.

For people in the Toronto area looking for art instruction, the Toronto School of Art's fall term is beginning in a few days.
I teach introductory life drawing Saturday mornings (course  # 902) and Intermediate life drawing on Wednesday nights (course # 832), and a couple of other classes as well.  You can get more details about the school's many course offerings and registration info here.
