2nd Entry for Jan. 7 2011
Above are two 5-minute studies, and below two 10-minute ones. These are all done with 8b graphite on 18 x 24" cartridge paper.
Usually I try to control my shading to more precisely describe surface anatomy. And M- 's lean-ness is at a near-ecorche level, which makes it alluring to demonstrate anatomical understanding in each study of him. But that night I was feeling a little bolder, and it came though in the drawing.
I began to consider that owing to the dynamism of his poses, perhaps letting the images be looser would convey his character better than pristine accuracy. After all, I have drawn enough that nothing is likely to be too far out of line, even if the exact shape of shadows is a little off.
