5th Entry for Oct. 18, 2010

These are a 10-minute study above, and a 15-minute one below. Graphite on white paper can look a bit washed out, and takes a long time to build up.  These two sheets of 12 x 15 cartridge paper had a layer of yellow ochre chalk pastel worked into the surface ahead of time. The chalk also makes the surface a little grittier, which adds tooth to pick up the graphite, and the colour fills the space between strokes.

At this point in that evening I had stopped resisting the tempo of the music, and was making shading strokes in time to the disco rhythms that were playing, and was more into a drawing groove.

The upper study is not as reddish as the photo suggests.
