Entry for Feb 2, 2014

On the Sunday morning, Kate was over at the Daniel's Spectrum building for the Sackville Drawing Session. These are four 10-minute studies above and three 15-minute ones below. All are done with a Pitt calligraphy-point felt pen. the 10-minute ones are on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper, and the 15's are on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson XL Drawing paper. the bottom five had a small amount of gestural pencil undersketching, to help establish proportions and take some of the pressure off of the drawing of the ink lines.

4th entry for Jan 28, 2014

These are a couple of 10-minute studies above and two 15-minute ones below. Top two are Pitt pen on 18 x 24" Canson XL Drawing paper, the cream-coloured one is Pitt pen on 18 x 24" Somerset Book paper, and the bottom one is water-soluble graphite on 18 x 24" 150 lb Maidstone rag paper.

The Spring term at the TSA starts imid-April. If you have some experience in figure drawing and would like to push it further, I teach a Beyond Basic Life Drawing class on Thursdays from 6 - 9 p.m. You can register here, and if you enter the promo code SPRING40, you can save $40 too.

I'm also offering a special 3-day workshop on drawing with india ink. If you're interested in exploring line and wash drawings using ink, it will run May 12-14 from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. daily, and you can enroll for it here, and the code SPRING30 would save you $30 on this one.

There are a couple of other Spring courses I will be teaching, but I don't want to overload people, so keep an eye out or check the TSA Spring timetable.

Entry for Jan 23, 2014

On the Thursday evening the TSA hosted a special event in conjunction with the Offsite Design Festival. Titled Illustration Noir, the evening had two hours of poses, music and sets channeling a Film Noir feeling.
Karen Justl, who teaches at the school handpainted some striking sets and other decorations, and models Shel and Sergio were in costumes loaned by Monarch Vintage, a local clothes store.
A number of people came out to draw, and I helped out with the hosting of the night. As a consequence my own drawing was not as focussed as it could have been. It was interesting to see a more Toons On Tap style drawing session taking place at the school, and a real drawing challenge. All of these are done with Pitt pen on 18 x 24" Canson Recycled Sketch paper. The top centre and bottom ones are roughly 4 minutes each, and the 2nd and 4th ones are roughly 15 minutes each.

Entry for Jan 16, 2014

On the Thursday I went up to a Collective drawing session up around Yonge and Eglinton. As is the case with those, lots of banter while working, and some tasty food.  Mara was the volunteer model for the evening. Whereas other people there work happily in little Moleskine pads and sketchbooks, trying to fit a lanky figure on small paper is a particular challenge for me.
These are all done with Pitt calligraphy point markers on 12 x 18" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper. On the bottom one the pen was dying, so the marks are more gray than black.
From the top, these are three 10- minute studies, three 15-minute studies, a 25-minute one and a 5-minute at bottom.

The next two are Water soluble graphite on 18 x 24" sheets of 150 lb Maidstone paper, and the bottom one is the same graphite on an 18 x 24" sheet of 90 lb Somerset paper.

Entry for Jan 12, 2014

(I'm very happy to note that the drawing skills course I will be teaching on Sundays starting Feb 23 is definitely on, and there is room for a few more people.
It's at OCADU through their Continuing Studies program. 5 weeks, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.  It's an intermediate level course, covering not just figure drawing, but exploring colour pencils, watercolour pencil washes, ink and mixed media. You can enroll for it  here.)

On the Sunday at the 519 Community Centre's monthly Sunday session, Jimmy was in working. These are a couple of 20-minute studies above, a 25- and a 35-minute one below that and a 15-minute one at the bottom. The top two and the bottom ones are on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper, done with Pitt pen and some additional oil-based pencil shading.
The two just above the last are done on 18 x 24" sheets of 150 lb. Maidstone paper, using water-soluble graphite.
The Sundays run 10 -1 on the second Sunday of each month, cost $10 and are open to all. 519 Church St is the address.I like the brightness and lack of clutter in the room.
