2nd Entry for Oct.16, 2011

In the afternoon, I worked on two studies of T-  . The upper one was approx. 2 hours, while the lower one was roughly 40 minutes. Both are using hard compressed charcoal on 18 x 24" sheets of cartridge paper.
I was experimenting with varying the `infill' of the paper's surface grain. In the opper one, T-  's figure was drawn directly, and the surrounding areas were blended down into the paper. The surfaces she sits on use direct shading over top of vayring intensities of blended local value. In the lower image, T-   's figure was drawn, the charcoal blended and erased to establish tonal areas, then overdrawn with direct shading. The background is just direct shading no blending.

5th entry for May 11, 2010

From top down these are two 10-minute poses and a 20-minute one, as memory serves. For a change I tried using some compressed charcoal on the newsprint along with the Conte crayon I usually use. I'm beginning to feel that I have drawn enough Conte on newsprint studies of people working aerially, and that means there is a cushion to proceed from in investigating other media and ultimately more permanent papers with this subject matter I enjoy.

1st entry for January 18, 2009

I managed to get out of bed early enough to attend the Sunday morning session that Sunday as well. H- was working. I missed the gesture poses, being incapable of getting out on a non-teaching Sunday on time. These were the 10-minute poses that were happening when I got there.

2nd Entry for December 5, 2008 (belated)

These were all around 15 minutes in duration, maybe 20 on the standing figure with some background shading (typically put there to camouflage some unsuccessful contours)

4th Entry for December 3, 2008

These were about 25 minutes each, which gave the time to get into more carefully modelled lighting.

3rd Entry for November 23rd, 2008

These were 10-minute poses. L- 's curly semi-Mohawk haircut was challenging to set down at all quickly. The night was one where my drawing was working out fairly well. Some nights, it just flows. Others, it is a like a street-by-street battle to put the marks in the places where I want them. With L- , one could work out skeletal structure fairly well, and I was able to get quite a lot of anatomical information suggested in her back. Mostly, I let the shadows tell the story in that regard.
