2nd entry for July 2, 2009

These were all 2-minute studies.

Not the sort of work I'll be showing July 10, 11 & 12 at the Lennox Gallery as part of their "Rejects" show, but I will be there, showing some drawings. If you check out the Flickr albums listed as a link on the side, you'll get a better idea of the work I'll be showing there.

1st entry for July 2, 2009

(* Showtime - see below! )

Thursday night was the first opportunity I'd had in a few weeks to visit Diane McGrath's Drawing Room studio. During June there was a different reason - all worthwhile - as to why I had to give them a pass. It was nice to get there and see a good number of people there drawing. B- was the model - I had drawn her once before, the first time I had come there to try the space out. Her primary focus is dance.

These were some of the 1-minute and 2-minute poses that she did on a trapeze.

* Come see some art:
These sorts of high-speed, spontaneous drawings comprise the main art of my creative output at present, but I do also do some more involved works. I will be showing some of them at the Lennox Contemporary Gallery in Toronto on July 10th, 11th and 12th. The gallery is hosting a "Salon des Refuses" of artists who were turned down from the Toronto Outdoor Art Show at Nathan Phillips Square. ( The nathan Phillips show always gets more applicants than spaces, so some interesting people always get passed by).

The Lennox Gallery is at 12 Ossington - Just North of Queen St.
Show runs Friday, 4pm to 10,
Saturday & Sunday, noon to 7 pm.

3rd entry for June 30, 2009

These were 20-minute poses as well. Having done a couple of good sensitive studies, I devoted the last stretch of the evening to some further 'structural' studies of D- .They are done with a 2B pencil on 24 x 36" cartridge paper.

As with any of the studies posted here, if you click on an image, you can see an enlarged version of it.

2nd entry for June 30, 2009

These were 20-minute poses. I felt the drawing was going very well that night. it peaked for me with the study of D- sitting cross-legged in the chair. These studies, like most of the ones posted here, are done with HB conte crayon on 24 x 36 sheets of newsprint.

5th entry for June 28, 2009

I was sufficiently successful in setting down some sensitive studies of J- in the first part of the evening, so I returned to my `training' for the Structural Bodies' workshop I'm doing in a few weeks. A friend was asking why I wasn't drawing more 'little boxes' in the figures, as an animator was showing that approach to her. So I endeavoured to project more boxy forms into J-. It sort of works on the rbb/shoulder and hip areas of a person, on heads and on the palms of hands, but personally, I see bodies much more in tubular and conic terms than on boxy ones.
There was an artist - Luca Cambiaso - whose drawings interpreted bodies as box forms, but I still find that a hard one to wrap my head around.

The sitting and standing studies were 15 and 20 minutes, and drawn with a 2h and a 2b pencil on 24 x 36 cartridge paper. The reclining pose was 20 minutes, but I stayed on and worked on the space and model stand for over an hour on top of that.
