2nd entry for Oct 8, 2013
These are 2-minute and three-minute studies, done with a Pentel brushpen on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper.
The Drawing Room sessions are currently happening every Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Collective Space, unit 5 at 221 Stirling Ave. It's open to anyone to come draw, and costs $10 per session. I think it is one of the best gesture/action drawing challenges in the city (outside of everyday life itself, of course!)

On the Tuesday afternoon I was very happy to see the return of Diane Mcgrath's Drawing Room aerial drawing sessions. Sandra was working, and these are some 1-minute and 2-minute studies done with a Pentel brushpen on 18 x 24" sheets of cartridge paper.

2nd entry for Sep 26, 2013
These are three 1-minute studies above, a couple of 15-minute ones below and a 5-minute study with later reworking. The top four are all on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper. THe second-last is on 18 x 24" Canson Mixed-Media paper with some stencilled india ink spray, and the bottom one is water-soluble graphite and a little black brushpen on an 18 x 24" sheet of 150 lb Maidstone paper. All the others were drawn with a Pentel brushpen.

1st entry for Sept 26, 2013
(Once in a while I get the dates a bit out of order... )
I'm happy to note that the 6-week afternoon Saturday intro Life Drawing course at the TSA is definitely going ahead starting this weekend, Oct 26. It runs 12:45 - 3:45 weekly. It's not too late to join, and you can enroll with a discount here.
On the last Thursday before I went in for a little bit of medical work, Scott was working at Project:Art. These are some 1-minute studies, done on a variety of papers, mostly 18 x 24" cartridge paper with a Pentel brushpen.

Entry for October 6, 2013
(Once again, there's a Saturday afternoon Intro to Life Drawing of mine coming up in about a week. Enroll via the link here and you can get a $40 discount on it, too)
On the Sunday afternoon, Vivian was working at the Sackville space. The afternoon session has shifted back from three poses to one 3-hour pose. Better for painters, but I liked the 40-50 minutes per-pose option. Less time to overwork, especially with my limited will-power where time constraints are concerned.
This is done with water-soluble graphite on an 18 x 24" sheet of 150 lb Maidstone rag paper. The graphite is appealing to work with because of the greater range of values it allows, and the intrinsic edge of unpredictability of it. And pencil graphite merges fairly seamlessly with it after the fact.
I had had ambitious notions of doing two or three studies on that afternoon, but this one ended up filling all the available time. There was also a couple of hours adjusting/reworking background values afterwards.
So at present two preferred working options are emerging: for short studies, the uncompromising black/white binary of felt-tip pigment pens and brushpen, which are really good discipline and brushwork practice, and the water-soluble graphite for 20 minutes and up. The graphite line brushed on is lighter, less absolute on the page.
So Copic markers have functioned as a good gateway drug back into wet media, but at present the lightfastness and workability of the graphite are trumping the immediacy and faster handling of the less-stable marker. And personally, I like the slightly granular quality of the graphite over the smoothness of Copic marks.
Retaining the lightness I could get with lighter-value inks with the Copic images is desirable.

2nd entry for Sept 24, 2013
(Disappointments, begone: I feel for anyone who has had the frustration of signing up for a class and not having it run. I'm happy to note that if anyone signs up this weekend for the 6-week Intro life-drawing class I'm teaching at the TSA, then it will be a guaranteed go-ahead. You can get a $40 discount too, by following the link here.)
These are a couple of 10-minute studies above, a couple of 15-minute ones below that and a 40-minute one at bottom, where I succumbed to the temptation of over-rendering a bit.
All are done with Pentel brushpen on 18 x 24" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper, except the lowest one, which is on Canson Mixed Media paper with a misted band of india ink.
1st entry for Sept 24, 2013

(Gesture drawing - setting down rapid info about a person's action - is one of the areas that we pay attention to in the 6-week Essentials of Life Drawing course which is starting next Saturday, running 12:45 - 3:45 weekly. It's not too late to join, and if you follow the link here, you can save an additional $40 in the process!)
Meredith was over at the TSA on the Tuesday evening, my first opportunity to go sketching after a long but ultimately worthwhile weekend at the Queen West Art Crawl. These are 1-minute studies done with Pentel brushpen on 18 x 24" sheets of cartridge paper.
