These are a couple more 3-minute studies and some 5-minute ones. All Pitt pen on 18 x 18" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper.

In the evening I went over to the White House Art Project session for a shot of fast poses. Hana was working, and these are some 1-minute and 2-minute studies, al done with Pitt pen on 18 x 18" sheets of Canson Recycled Sketch paper.

On the Monday afternoon I tried out the North Light Studio space, which is next door to the ARC studio in a building near Adelaide and John. It is a smaller space, but had a nice feel to it. There aren't many daytime options for life drawing/painting in the summer, and it is nice to find another.
Sonja was working that afternoon. This is a 3.5 hour study, done in the same approach as the one of Polyna from the day before; graphite sketch & adjustments, India ink underlayer and oil-based Pitt pencil on top. This is the same Revere rag paper as well, also 18 x 24"
I liked the masking-taped `letterbox' effect, so revisited it as a way to fit what I felt worked better as a square composition on the rectangular format paper.

On the Sunday I went over to the ARC studio, and brought an 18 x 24" sheet of the heavier weight Revere multi-media paper that Aboveground sells.
Polyna was working, and this has an India ink wash underlayer with oil-based pencil on top. I felt a thinner, wider composition would be more interesting, so I masked off a band top and bottom, and I do like the effect of that `letterboxing'. The India ink allows for smoother tonal passages than the Chinese ink, which gave a little more tonal control. Also, the paper is smoother, so drawn marks on top are finer and mesh better with the washes.

On the Saturday afternoon after class, I went over to Artists 25, and found Paris working there. this is a 2-hour study with some ongoing reworking of the too-busy and brushy) background.
It's Chinese ink and oil-based pencil on 18 x 24" Strathmore cold-press Series 300 watercolour paper, which has a distinct pattern pressed into it, like that of a paper towel or Canson Mi-Tientes, which shows a lot in areas that have shading in pencil.
It's not my best work, but holds together slightly better, I feel, than the similarly timed image of Phlip from the week before.

3rd entry for July 10, 2015

These are all water-soluble graphite on 18 x 24" sheets of watercolour paper, either Canson or Strathmore.  I continue to enjoy how the directness of pencil drawing can be quickly shifted into brushy washes.
The top three are 10-minute studies, and the lower three are 15-minutes. Any shorter than these and there was not enough time to include any description of tattoos. A longer stretch of time would have been better still for that.
