1st entry for May 29. 2012

On the Tuesday night I went to the first of a series of summer drawing sessions at OCAD U, run by S-   . He was also the model for that night.  It's a longer session, running for 4 hours, with half given over to lots of short poses, and the other half to a few very long poses.  The intent is to be a bit looser and more playful than some drawing sessions.  It runs 6-10, in room 617 through the summer months and is open to anyone to join in.  The fee is $10 for students, $15 for non-students,

S- was doing lots of dynamic gesture poses to start. These are all 1-minute studies, done with hard compressed charcoal on 18 x 24" sheets of bond paper with hard compressed charcoal.

(Gesture drawing is one of the approaches to drawing people that I view as a really important foundation of life drawing. It is a part of the 8-week summer course in figure drawing that I'll be teaching at the TSA in July and August on Tuesday nights. You can get more details about that here.)

2nd entry for May 27, 2012

I made it back fpr a portion of the evening's drawing session.  A-    was working, and these are 15-minute studies, with the exception of the second from the bottom, which was 20 minutes.
The top one is on 18 x 24" bond paper; the next one is on 18 x 24" Canson Recycled Sketch paper, and the lower two are on 22 x 30" sheets of Maidstone rag paper.
The lowest one has a powdered gray chalk underlayer.
Limited life drawing time - and some unfamiliar models - meant that I was playing a bit safer of late, but as my confidence level was getting  back in place, I was starting to try to give attention once more to this year's motif of 'no boring life drawings'.

I find this is still being impeded by materials not quite doing what I'd like them to, and scale issues.
I'd really like to find a pad of paper comparable in weight and finish to Canson's Recycled Sketch Paper that was 22 x 30". Pads only seem to go up to 18 x 24", and single sheets of larger paper are usually much more costly and heavy.

1st entry for May 27, 2012

On the Sunday morning,  C-   was working. These are two 5-minute studies, a 10-minute and a fifteen- minute one below that, and a 1-hour study at the bottom.
The top two are on 18 x 24" bond paper, the middle one is on Canson Recycled Sketch paper. and the lowest two are on 22 x 30" sheets of Maidstone rag paper. All are done with hard compressed charcoal, but the two  drawings on Maidstone have an underlayer of powdered chalk as well.

2nd entry for May 25

These are, from the top, a 15-minute, a 10-minute and a 20-minute study. The top two are charcoal on Canson Recycled Sketch, and the bottom one is the same material on a 22 x 30" sheet of Maidstone rag paper.
I was struggling more with the drawing than I do on some occasions, but as always, it was a good workout.
